Elayne Windsor
Palimpsest
August 1 - 25, 2025
Elayne Windsor explores the material and conceptual possibilities of graphite, collage, and décollage. Her practice is rooted in an ongoing investigation of connection, between people, places, histories, and materials.
Travelling through Pompeii, she was captivated by the city’s structured pathways–ancient arteries that once linked a community in surprisingly modern ways. These physical routes sparked deeper reflections on how systems, both literal and metaphorical, bind us together–ideas of structure, organization, time, and the body surface repeatedly in her layered works.
Each composition begins with paper, secured piece by piece to the substrate, then altered using an orbital sander to expose what lies beneath. This process evokes erosion: not only of the materials themselves, but of the environment, memory, and even democratic ideals. What remains? What fades? What transforms?
Windsor’s surfaces are rich with contradiction; rigid angles meet organic form, and human artifacts collide with natural textures. In this tension, she finds space for contemplation. Her work does not seek resolution. Instead, it offers a field for inquiry, a layered meditation on the quiet persistence of connection.
