Joy McCallister

Joy is drawn to using vibrant colours in her art and telling a story. Her passion for dance, music, and nature are her art inspirations. After experimenting for many years, Joy discovered her preference for abstract realism and texture imposed on intimate views of nature and life. The rhythm in her artwork comes from her dance background and how she feels painting is akin to dancing with a brush. She’s usually dancing in her head anyway, so it naturally leads to movement in her artwork. Joy was born in Nova Scotia, and now lives in Kirkfield with her husband Chris and their very energetic dog Sadie. 

As time permits, Joy enjoys teaching the occasional beginner art workshop, some in support of community programs and fundraisers. It’s the beginners she enjoys teaching the most as they inspire her and often refresh her approach to her own art. Member: Kawartha Arts Network, Kawartha Art Gallery, Kawartha Lakes Art Council.

The art of dance began my love for expression through rhythm and movement. It continues to be a major influence, coupled with music and nature, on who I am as an artist and what inspires me. It’s been no surprise to me that I'm drawn to creating art with high impact and vibrant colours with a story behind it.
